How to make an Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned cocktail

Ahhh, the Old Fashioned. Touted as the first cocktail ever concocted, this is the drink for all you spirit-forward, whisky lovin’ folks out there (us included). Using only three main ingredients, this is one drink that looks simple to make, but difficult to master. But practice makes perfect, and perfecting an Old Fashioned is an excellent way to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for cocktail making as a craft. It’s the first cocktail recipe ever created in the world, after all. Here’s how.

Ingredients

  • 60ml whisky (most go with bourbon or rye, but blended Scotch can be great too)
  • 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, or 1 bar spoon of simple syrup)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: Orange peel
  • Optional: Dash of soda water
